[ Tire Load Rating ] Tire load rating, load ratings for tires explained. Find out all you need to know to buy wheels and tires at Wheelstudio.com
Replacement tires must have a load carrying capacity equal to or
greater than the capacity of the original tires, at their recommended
pressures. Using the wrong size tire can lead to tire failure.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: If you require different air pressures for your new
tires to carry the tire loads, you have the responsibility to ensure
those pressures are ALWAYS used.
If that is not done or you do not personally check your pressures,
there is a high risk that your pressures will be set at the original
requirements, and your tires will be underinflated, which can result in
tire failure and accident.
Below is a table of load index and the weight that each tire can carry for each given load index. Please keep in mind that these are maximum weights, and while your car may only weigh 300 pounds, cornering forces may cause more weight to be distributed to a tire. In other words, for that hypothetical 3000 pound car, you would need more than a tire with a load rating of 71 (750 pounds).
